Ålesund is Norway’s art-nouveau town; stroll through streets watched over by gargoyles decorating ornate, gabled and turreted buildings. Enjoy sailing between thousands of islands and islets along Norway’s beautiful coastline and cross the Arctic Circle. In Tromsø, the daring lines of the Arctic Cathedral are matched only by tales of famous Arctic explorers in the city’s museums. You might choose to ascend Mount Fagernes by cable car, or meet Polar wildlife at the world’s northernmost zoo. Honningsvaag is the northernmost port in this voyage and your chance to visit the incredible North Cape before Marco Polo heads to Alta.

During an overnight stay in Alta, known as the ‘City of the Northern Lights’, you can choose from a host of optional tours. Perhaps take a drink in the frozen bar of the famous Igloo Hotel, or venture away from the city for a chance to witness the Aurora Borealis, a curtain of purples, pinks, blues and greens rippling across the inky dark sky. Kristiansund, built on four main islands, has a centuries-old seafaring tradition and a tour option of the Atlantic Ocean Road, whilst Åndalsnes offers a chance to enjoy breathtaking fjord scenery dressed for winter. Finally explore historic Bergen, whose Hanseatic waterfront harbours shops selling traditional Norwegian souvenirs.
